The group was composed of volunteers of all ages from the Friends and a party of visitors from our CCN Centre in Kiel, North Germany.
Following a breakfast of coffee and croissants, the group heard the inspirational story of the volunteer project to help rebuild the Deaconess Hospital in Dresden in 1965, at the height of the Cold War. Pat Holmes who co-ordinated fundraising for this herculean act of reconciliation, introduced the story. Clips from original footage of the volunteers at work were also shown.
The group then split into teams and set about a variety of tasks, polishing brasss in the Lady Chapel, weeding in the gardens, cleaning and dusting the Gethsemane chapel and the Beyer Tablets of the Word, polishing in the chancel.
By the end of the morning of hard work, areas were sparkling as never before! It was a hugely enjoyable and worthwhile effort, culminating in a sandwich lunch provided by the Friends.
